Prof. Wasunna was born in Karateng. Kisumu District in 1938. After his early education at Maseno High School, he proceeded to Makerere University College in 1958 where he studied Medicine and was awarded MB Ch.B. degrees in 1961. He served in the Ministry of Health as a doctor until around 1967 when he went to the United Kingdom for postgraduate professional training in Surgery. On his return home in 1971, he joined the Department of Surgery of the University of Nairobi. He served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery since 1975, as a Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and as a member of the University Senate for over ten years. Prof. Wasunna built one of the best postgraduate training programmes in Surgery in Africa today where over 50 specialists have, so far, been trained in Surgery under his tutelage. He was a first class and most dedicated practical surgeon whose skills in the profession are internationally recognised. Prof. Wasunna was a member of many national and international medical societies and organizations. He served on many occasions as a consultant to the World Health Organization in various capacities. Prof. Wasunna's research interest was in the area of Gastroenterological Surgery, an area where he published extensively, and an area where he was the leading expert in Kenya. He has over 40 publications, mainly in the field of Surgery. Prof. Wasunna passed on in the year 2008 and is post-humously honored.
