PROF. ABDULAZIZ, HASSAN MOHAMED

Prof. Abdulaziz was born in 1932 in Mombasa where he also received his early education. He joined the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London and was awarded a B.A. (Hons) degree in Classical and Modern Arabic, and an M.A. degree in Swahili. He then joined the University College, London where he obtained a PhD degree. He was appointed Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Dar-es-Salaam University College between 1967 and 1970. In 1970 he transferred to the University of Nairobi as a Senior Lecturer becoming full Professor in 1978. He was variously Chairman of the Department of Linguistics and Dean of Faculty of Arts between 1972 and 1983, and on a number of occasions acted as Principal of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Prof. Abdulaziz has many publications in the area of language and linguistics. He was a member of many major international linguistics associations, and served on the editorial boards of a number of journals. He was appointed visiting professor or scholar in numerous universities in America, the Middle East, Europe and Africa and attended various international conferences in different parts of the world. He was Chairman of the Social Sciences Committee of the National Commission for UNESCO, and Member of the National Culture Council.
