Prof. Githinji was born in Kamacharia Location, Murang’a County in 1936. He attended Kagumo High School, Makerere College, Morgan State College, Purdue University (BSME-1960), California Institute of Technology (MS-1961, ME-1963) and did research at the University of Nairobi (PhD-1975). He was a Professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Nairobi where he was a member of staff since August 1965. He was nominated for the Governor’s Prize for the best second year student at Makerere College (1957-1958), and African-American Institute Scholar (1958-1959); and was admitted to Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honour Society in the USA) in 1960. He is a registered Engineer in Kenya and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK). Prof. Githinji has done research and published in the fields of boiling heat transfer, drying (heat and mass transfer) of agricultural products, energy resources and environmental impacts and engineering education. He has served extensively in many national and international technological, education and research council/boards including chairmanship of the Industrial Science Advisory Research Committee and the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI).
