
PROF. MWAJA, N. VASEY
Prof. Mwaja was in 1954. He received his early education at Lower Chure Primary School and Nkubu High School in Meru County and attended Egerton College, Njoro in Nakuru where he attained a Diploma in Horticulture (Distinction). He received his B.Sc. in Agricultural Sciences and M.Sc. Agriculture (Plant Sciences) from California and Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the U.S. He later joined the University of Illinois Natural History Survey as a Visiting Extension Specialist and Monsanto Agricultural Company in Missouri for Postdoctoral Research in weed science. Prof. Mwaja began university teaching and research in 1988 at Egerton University, Njoro. Vasey has had long standing in agricultural research and project management. He is a Management Consultant with Africa Investment Centre and President of Secure Capital Investment Limited, a venture capital and project financing group. He was previously a Senior Program Officer in Agricultural Development with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle Washington USA. He held various senior positions with the private and public sector institutions in Kenya. Prof. Mwaja was the Chairman of National Commission for Science and Technology and Director of Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service. He spent 15 years in pesticide research in the U.S., Europe and Africa coordinated the FAO/CropLife International obsolete pesticides safeguarding program. He has published refereed scientific papers mainly in the area of plant biochemistry, horticulture, pesticides, crop physiology and presented scientific papers in international conferences and workshops. Prof. Mwaja served as the Technical Chairman of the National Research Task Force appointed by Kenya Government to advice on the establishment of the National Agricultural Research System (NARS), a member of Grants Advisory and Approval Committee of the Kenya Agricultural Productivity Program (KAPP) and Chairman of the Kenya Agricultural Productivity and Agribusiness Project (KAPAP) Research Proposal Review Advisory Committee (RePRAC). He served in the team that revised the Government of Kenya Strategy for Revitalization of Agriculture (SRA) and formulation of the Agricultural Sector Development Strategy (ASDS) to align the agricultural sector with the aspirations of the Kenya’s Vision 2030. He is an active member of the project proposals review panel both nationally and internationally. Prof. Mwaja is an active member of the: Royal Society of Biologists (UK); International Society of Farming Systems Research and Extension; International Allelopathy Society; European Weed Science Research; Weed Science Society for Eastern and Southern Africa; Weed Science Society of America; International Society of Horticultural Science; and American Society of Horticultural Science. Vasey’s research interest is in crop ecophysiology and management. Prof. Mwaja is currently a member of the Council of Scientific Advisers at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Trieste, Italy; member of the Advisory Board of Savida Agricom in Mumbay, India; and member of the Meru Economic and Social Council. He was admitted into the membership of Kenya National Academy of Sciences (KNAS) in 2015 and Fellow of Royal Society of Biologists (RSB) in the United Kingdom in 2016.
