
PROF. MANDE, DEMESI JOHN
Prof. Mande is an Associate Professor and Academic Head of Veterinary Surgery and former Chairman of Department of Clinical Studies, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nairobi. He holds Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (1989), Master of Science in Clinical Studies (1993) and PhD in Clinical Studies (2003) degrees from University of Nairobi. He has over 30 years working experience in teaching, research, and clinical practice as Assistant Lecturer (1992), Lecturer (1993), Senior Lecturer (2004) and Associate Professor (2015 to date). He coordinates teaching, research and clinical practice of Veterinary Surgery to undergraduates and postgraduates, and has supervised 5 PhD students to completion (and 2 ongoing) and 11 Masters students to completion (and 4 ongoing). He serves as the Departmental Postgraduate Studies Coordinator, Member, Faculty Postgraduate Studies Committee, Chairman, Faculty Curriculum Development Committee, and is an active Member of the Faculty Board and College Academic Board. He is a Member of Kenya Veterinary Association, and Kenya Small and Companion Animal Veterinary Association. He is a Gold Life Member (No. 099), and Chairman, Veterinary Medicine Chapter, University of Nairobi Alumni Association. As an Accredited Peer-Reviewer, Commission for University Education, he has served on the Panel of Experts that reviewed BSc in Animal Health/Animal Science curricula for two Public Universities. As an Accredited Principal Investigator for Pest Control Products Board, he conducted clinical field efficacy trials for two antiparasitic drugs (Fipronil - Norbrook Ltd and Advantix -Bayer Animal Health EA Ltd), which are registered for use on dogs in Kenya. He has over 12 years of senior administrative and corporate leadership and governance experience, having served as Chairman, Department of Clinical Studies, University of Nairobi (2013-2015), Director, Kenya Dairy Board (2006-2009), and Elected Director, Kenya Veterinary Board (2012-2018). He is a Member, Internship Committee and Adhoc Committee on Development of Guidelines for Televeterinary Medicine, Kenya Veterinary Board. Prof. Mande participated in formulation of the Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Paraprofessionals Regulations 2013, Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Paraprofessionals (Code of Ethics) Regulations 2015, Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Paraprofessionals (Veterinary Medicines Directorate) Regulations 2015, Revised Harmonized Curriculum for Artificial Insemination and accompanying Training Modules, 2014, Minimum Standards and Guidelines for Certificate, Diploma and BSc. in Animal Health and Production and Bachelors degree in Veterinary Medicine, 2013 and Guidelines for Inspection and Accreditation of over 20 Animal Health Training Institutions and 2 Veterinary Schools, and the Veterinary Internship Guidelines. He has over 40 peer-reviewed publications in international scientific journals and is recipient of the International Veterinary Radiology Association (IVRA) Travel Fellowship (2003), Veterinary Academia Award (2009) by Kenya Veterinary Board/Kenya Veterinary Association, and the University of Nairobi Scholarship (1989). He is a former Editor-In-Chief, Kenya Veterinarian.
