
PROF. ESTAMBALE, B. A.
Prof. Estambale is a Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Outreach) at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST). He is a Professor of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.More importantly, he is a Medical Doctor who has specialized in the management and control of tropical and infectious diseases. His academic passion in the area of tropical and infectious diseases saw him awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship in 1986 for a Master of Science (MSc) and a Diploma in Tropical and Infectious Diseases (DTM&H) at the University of Liverpool, UK. Similarly, he was granted a Danida Fellowship Award to pursue a doctoral degree through a sandwich programme at the Danish Bilharziasis Laboratory, Denmark in 1990. Over a span of thirty years, Prof. Estambale has played a very instrumental role in research activities that have focused on various health research activities of public health importance. These include HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other neglected diseases of the poor. He has spearheaded the completion of research work on the relationship between climate change, population health and vector borne diseases including malaria and rift valley fever. Concomitantly, he has served in various capacities either as a principal investigator, project director or programme coordinator as well as committee/board member of various research projects and programmes. Significantly, he was a Principal Investigator in the WHO/TDR/IDRC multi-country project on population health vulnerabilities and resilience to climate sensitive vector borne diseases in Africa as well as Coordinator of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) component of the CDC funded University HIV Fellowship Training Programme. He has also been involved in the scale-up programmes for antiretroviral therapy (ART) in health facilities within Nairobi County. A milestone in his career as a doctor-turned- researcher, he was the founder and pioneer Director of the University of Nairobi’s Institute of Tropical and Infectious Disease (UNITID) for 9 years where he was instrumental in establishing the Institute and setting up the infrastructure for graduate degree training in health research and fellowship programmes as well as the Level-3 advanced bio- containment Laboratories. Prof. Estambale is an avid grant writer and an experienced resource mobilizer with grants totalling to several billions in Kenya shillings. At JOOUST, he is currently holding five (5) research grants awarded by the World Health Organization, National Research Fund (NRF) South Africa, NRF-Kenya, USAID and VLIR- UOS Belgium. He has attended several conferences locally, regionally and internationally. He continues to publish immensely in refereed journals at the same time making contribution to book writing and review. As a mentor, he has and continues to supervise both MSc. and Ph.D. students to successful completion. He is a health consultant and a member to several professional bodies aligned to his area of medical expertise.
