Prof. Kasili was born in Bukusu, Bungoma District in 1942.

After his early education at Friends School Kamusinga and Alliance High School he proceeded to Makerere University College in 1963 where he trained in medicine. He obtained his MB ChB. degrees in 1968, and joined the Ministry of Health where he worked as a doctor between 1969 and 1972. He did his postgraduate professional training in Hematology at Glasgow University between 1973 and 1974 under WHO fellowship and was a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (F.R.C. PATH). He obtained his M.D. degree at the University of Nairobi in 1980 on the topic of "Leukaemia in Kenya". Prof. Kasili had wide consultancy and administrative experience on national and international bodies, and had attended many conferences and symposia at which he presented research papers. His researches were largely on blood diseases, particularly cancers and haemorrhagic disorders of which he was one of the few leading authorities in Kenya. Prof. Kasili published consistently since 1969 and had over 50 papers published in various journals. Prof. Kasili passed on in the year 2009 and is post-humously honored.
